With technology in the classroom on the rise and the demands of the Common Core, it only makes sense for educators to consider using this gaming system as an enrichment tool. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM represents the fields in today's workforce that are constantly changing. These are also the fields that less and less university students are majoring in. America is currently behind in these aforementioned fields when compared to other countries. However, it has been noted that our young children initially show interest and ability in STEM disciplines before the age 14. If we can get students hooked on these disciplines before they lose interest (ages 6-14), then we will have a greater number of kids who might aim to enter in these fields. STEM created the video game challenge with the intent to gain the interests of elementary and middle school students. The games are similar to other video games except with a strict yet intriguing educational component. After viewing the 2013 STEM Video Game Challenge site, discuss your views on how it can enhance our curriculum.

This is a great way to motivate students. Most kids love video games. Video games peak children's interest and integrates technology in to the curriculum. It is creative and competitive and would engage the students so much that they could not wait to get to school.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting idea. Students today are all about video games. STEM seems to be very creative in the way they are going about introducing this idea. I would think that this should go over very successfully when introduced to students.
ReplyDeleteI think the kids will love the idea of playing video games at school! It is a way to mix education with fun and help engage even less motivated students. My school has STEM classes in our 4th and 5th grades. I think this challenge is definitely worth them looking into. Great post!
